Pomeranian

The Pomeranian is a breed of dog in the Spitz
family, named for the Pomerania region. The Pomeranian is
a lively little dog. This toy breed is smart and eager to
learn early in life. Loyal to their owners, they can also
be stubborn, cheeky, cunning and
temperamental.
Height 'n Weight
Height: 7-12 inches (18-30 cm.)
Weight: 3-7 pounds (1-3 kg.)
Temperament
One positive of the Pomeranian breed would be
their ability to be excellent watchdogs. They are
intelligent, quick-witted and aware of their
surroundings. They may point out objects that are out of
place before humans notice them. They are constantly
watching for something to happen and usually catch when
something does. They have a distinct, loud bark that
often times makes them sound bigger than they really
are.
Exercise needs
Poms need
a daily
walk. Play will take
care of a lot of their exercise needs, however, as with all
breeds, play will not fulfill their primal instinct to walk.
Dogs who do not get to go on daily walks are more likely to
display behavior problems. They will also enjoy a good romp
in a safe open area off lead, such as a large fenced in
yard.
Trainability
Pomeranians are lively intelligent dogs that are
easily trained, but like many small dogs housebreaking a
Pom can be a bit of a challenge. The key to successfully
potty training your Pom is to start early and maintain a
structured and organized training schedule. The first
step in house training your Pomeranian is to set up the
training area. You need to spend as much time in the
training area with your Pom as possible. Play with the
dog in there and feed the dog there as well.
Nutrition & Diet
The
Pomeranian does not need a special diet,
but because the breed is prone to tooth loss and oral
problems a quality, dry food is recommended. Don’t be
tempted to overfeed the Pomeranian – remember this dog is
only small! Always provide plenty of fresh, clean
water.
Living conditions
The
Pomeranian is good for apartment living. They are very
active indoors and will do okay without a yard. Keep the
dog quiet in hot weather to avoid
overheating.
Life expectancy
About
15
years.
Origin
Developed in the
Prussian region of Pomerania, the Pomeranian was
originally descended from the ancient Spitz breeds of the
far north which were brought to Europe and employed to
herd sheep.
