Podengo Portugueso Pequeno

Podengo Portugueso Pequeno also known as
“Portuguese Hound” These breeds are long, strong, long
neck without dewlap. They have a small eyes set obliquely
in the skull with Honey or chestnut color. Shape of the
head is like that of a four-sided pyramid, with a broad
base and pointed tip. They have ears broad at the base,
triangular, thin leather. Held perfectly erect or tilting
slightly forward. The tail is strong, thick, pointed in
moderate length.
Height 'n Weight:
They should be 8-12 inches tall and weigh 11-13
pounds.
Temperament:
This rustic, extremely lively dog is used for
hunting, but also makes an excellent pet and loyal guard
dog. It is an intelligent, lively dog. This independent
breed has a large personality trapped in a small frame.
The Podengo thrives on activity and play which makes it a
wonderful companion for children. Although it is good
with other dogs and cats, the Podengo should never be
trusted with rodents, rabbits, or birds. The Podengo
Portugueso Pequeno used as Hunting dog, guard dog,
pet.
Exercise needs:
The Podengo Portugueso Pequeno requires a lot of
exercise and room to run. They need a daily, long, brisk
walk or jog.
Trainability:
They are easy to train, and eager to please. It
picks up on new commands at a relatively fast pace.
Nutrition & Diet:
The dietary need of your breed depend upon the
age, sex, health conditions and living conditions, etc.
These breeds are like all dogs, well omnivores and they
need all food content like proteins, fats, vitamins and
minerals. A healthy Podengo need healthy content and
fresh water.
Living conditions:
They are well-suited for hot sunny climates and
can live and sleep outdoors. The Podengo Portugueso
Pequeno is not recommended for apartment life.
Life expectancy:
About 12-14 years.
Origin:
The Podengo Portugueso Pequeno originated in
Portugal in the 1800s. They were derived from the Podengo
Portugueso Medio, and both breeds are bred with wire and
smooth coated forms. The Podengo Portugueso Pequeno is
sometimes described a resembling a sturdy Chihuahua. The
Portuguese Hound, descended from large-eared hounds, is
very common in northern Portugal where it is used as a
hunter and pet.
There are three varieties: -
The Large Portuguese Hound (Podengo grande): A very rare breed
used for hunting large game.
The Medium Portuguese Hound (Podengo medio): It hunts rabbit in
packs or alone & look very much like the Ibizan Hound
The Small Portuguese Hound (Podengo pequeno): It hunts rabbit
underground and looks much like the Chihuahua.
